Here at Font.Community — This is how we are addressing the issues.

  1. How do we protect the integrity of the font industry from monopolizing forces? Or, can we ever protect it at all?
Font.Community is a decentralized and community-driven marketplace where hundreds of font designers and foundries join together and sell their fonts in its platform without having to pay huge commissions to middlemen. Their Fonts are sold at best reasonable prices, which is a great driving force for the buyers to turn towards us for font downloads and licenses. Pool of shared ownership where 50% is owned by the users of the platform. Font Community platform, a great force in itself to avert monopolizing forces.
  2. Allow for more novel ways to share resources and profits between type designers, foundries, and users of typefaces that subvert the traditional designer/foundry split?
By introducing a $FONT token, we are solving this exact issue. By rewarding the network participants with the token for their contribution, we bring more value to the whole industry. Token and DAO will help large people coordinate together.
  3. Allow for more fairness and equitable inclusion for emerging type designers?
Removing all the market barriers and freely providing necessary tools and platforms will help emerging type designers to experience fairness and equitable inclusion.
  4. Introduce new and novel methods and incentives to fund future type design projects and type design careers?
We are working on Initial Font Offering (IFO), like ICO designers can raise funds from the crowd. In return, investors will get equity. Funds will be released based on milestone. If nothing moves, investors can pause the further release of funds. The successful font can be tokenized and traded in the free market. Or can sell the ownership as NFT.
  5. Introduce frictionless bounties for language support, non-Latin scripts, and other features that extend the inclusivity and range of any given typeface.
We have a plan for funding and bringing typeface to endangered languages. We are open to more ideas on this. We are planning to set more $FONT rewards for the endangered/needy languages
  6. Allow for better protections against unwanted intellectual property theft? While ushering a new culture of consensual remixes, covers, and homages where everyone is compensated and credited fairly?
This is the most challenging one. It’s tough to stop it but we can reduce it. One thing we are working on is adding license code inside the font file. So, we know who bought the font and license usage.
Another one is “Community Moderation” — We are giving an option for the community to moderate the font entry. By this, we can avoid potential violations.
  7. Allow for more streamlined and novel ways to distribute typefaces beyond the current licensing models?
Font community is working on public API. So, anyone can build a new solution on top of it. New licensing models can be proposed through DAO.
  8. Allow for productive and meaningful organizing strategies to enact larger change?
We are launching DAO and a public forum on this, where any user, creator, or general public can bring a new idea that benefits the font industry. Vote and implement as a community.
